What “Lion” Are You Feeding?
As we head into the weekend, I want to encourage you with a thought from Psalm 34:8-9. David writes:
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints, for those who fear Him have no lack!”
David reminds us that God’s blessings are something we are invited to taste and experience for ourselves. It’s not enough to merely know about God’s goodness intellectually; we need to feed on His many blessings intentionally and the promise is that those who choose to take refuge in Him—those who truly “feed” on His goodness—will never be in want.
There’s an ancient proverb that says, “In a fight between two lions, it’s the one that you feed that always wins.” We all have appetites within us battling for control. The question is, which appetite are we feeding?
Let me remind you of three key appetites we must be intentional about feeding:
1. Your Hunger for His Presence
The time we spend in God’s Word, in prayer, and in His presence is the most essential food for our spirit. Every day, make room to sit at His feet and taste and see His goodness in your quiet time. When we feed our souls with Him, we build the strength we need to face whatever may come.
2. Hunger for Personal Health
It’s easy to overlook, but taking care of our body and soul is also a spiritual act of worship. We are called to steward the physical temples God has given us (1 Corinthians 6:19). Yes, we need to daily push ourselves to exercise, eat well, and find moments to replenish our souls. It’s hard to fight the good fight when you are mentally, emotionally, or physically depleted.
3. Hunger for Family Time
Your family, your marriage, is a blessing. Husbands and wives, take time to invest in your marriage—date your spouse weekly and rekindle that spark. Parents, carve out moments of joy and connection with your children. Feeding your family relationships strengthens the bond that allows God’s love to flow freely in your home.
As we’ve moved through the book of Daniel, something stands out about this remarkable man of God who lived holy in an unholy land. He was consistent in areas where everyone else was inconsistent. His discipline and devotion to the Lord were the secret to standing strong before three separate kings. Again, when we choose to make God our refuge, feeding on His presence consistently, we build the strength we need to flourish in every season.
Ask yourself: Which lion am I feeding?
