THIS IS THAT HELPER

15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

“YOU KNOW HIM”

Is He Just A theology we teach on Sunday, or is He the Helper we walk with come Monday?

Is the Spirit just as much with you in the ordinary as he is extraordinary?

Pentecost was not just heaven-sending us power. It was heaven-sending us the Helper.

“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth…” (John 14:16–17, ESV)

“allos” — another of the exact same kind.

Jesus introduces the Holy Spirit as ANOTHER like Himself.

Before we see the POWER Jesus promised in Acts 1, we need to see the RELATIONSHIP Jesus promised in John 14.

Three Key Promises Jesus Makes About This Helper

1. THIS IS THE HELPER THAT NEVER LEAVES.

“He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever…” (John 14:16, ESV)

– Jesus said the Holy Spirit would never leave.

– Jesus said you and I would never be alone.

The first time the words “not good” appear in the Bible is not connected to sin; it is connected to solitude.

God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18, ESV).

2. THIS IS THE HELPER THAT THE WORLD CANNOT RECEIVE.

“He will give you another Helper…the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive” (John 14:17, ESV)

– The Holy Spirit is not an emotion. 

– The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth.

He does not flatter our feelings. He confronts our falsehood.

3. THIS IS THE HELPER THAT IS WITH YOU AND IN YOU.

“He will give you another Helper… for he dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:17, ESV)

“God has given us the great gift of his Spirit, who sets up residence in our hearts, yet we act as though he is not here.” Wilkerson

God loved you enough to put His own Spirit not near you,  not around you, but within you.

Jesus didn’t send the Holy Spirit merely to comfort us but to be in communion with us!

Communion means:

– Daily awareness

– Daily surrender

– Daily dependence

Before the Spirit works through you powerfully, Jesus wants you to know Him personally.
