THIS IS THAT FIRE
Series: This Is That | Pastor Daniel Norris
Text: Acts 2:1-4 (ESV)
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Pentecost reveals a pattern…The Spirit forms us, fills us, and flows through us.
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place (Acts 2:1, ESV)
“together” in Greek is homou
– It means being in one accord, one rhythm, and one direction.
1. THE PREPARATION…HE FORMS BEFORE HE FILLS
“They were all together in one place.” (Acts 2:1, ESV)
You see this from the beginning.
Genesis 1
On days one through three, God formed distinct realms.
– Day one, He separated light from darkness.
– Day two, He separated the sky from the waters.
– Day three, He separated the land from the sea.
On days four through six, He filled what He had formed.
– Day four, He filled the heavens with the sun, moon, and stars.
– Day five, He filled the sky and sea with birds and fish.
– Day six, He filled the land with living creatures and mankind.
God does not work outside of divine order. He works within it.
“For God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.” (1 Corinthians 14:33, ESV)
Gifting attracts attention, but formation sustains fire!
Four Areas Of Preparation
– My Prayer Life
– My Devotion Life
– My Accountability
– My Service
2. THE CONGREGATION…HE FILLS WHAT HE FORMS
“And it filled the entire house…” (Acts 2:2, ESV)
“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles… praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:42–47, ESV)
Pentecostal Revival led to a greater devotion to
– Corporate worship
– Corporate instruction
– Corporate fellowship
– Corporate evangelism
– Corporate ministry
Isolation extinguishes what community sustains
3. THE INITIATION…HE FLOWS THROUGH WHAT HE FILLS
“…and divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 2:3–4, ESV)
“For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” (Acts 2:39, ESV)
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…” (Acts 1:8, ESV)
Are you willing to become the kind of vessel God can trust with His fire?
