IF HE IS THE SAME YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND FOREVER… WHAT CAN HE DO FOR YOU?

Luke 4:16–19 (ESV)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

The Gospel is a message of HOPE
The Gospel is a message of HEALING

Is it still God’s will to heal? If so, how can I position myself to receive healing?

Good News from Three Blind Men

1. “Proximity is His Gift, Posture is My Choice.” – Blind Bartimaeus

Mark 10:46–52 (ESV)

46 And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” 50 And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus.

51 And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.”

52 And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.

  • Jesus chose to come close to us so that we could choose to come close to Him.
  • Jesus didn’t say no—He said come!
  • We are saved by grace through faith.
  • We are healed by grace through faith.

2. “Religion Restricts Vision, Jesus Restores It.” – Man Born Blind

John 9:1–7 (ESV)

1 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 Having said these things, He spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then He anointed the man’s eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.

Isaiah 61:1–2 → Luke 4

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord he has anointed me to bring proclaim good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,(Is 58:6) to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God;

Why the Difference?

• Jesus is quoting from the Greek Old Testament (Septuagint).
• He purposely blends Isaiah 61 and Isaiah 58—an early Jewish teaching style called “stringing pearls.”
• Most notable… He stops short of declaring “the day of vengeance.”

Today is the day of SALVATION not the day of VENGEANCE

Nazareth saw Rome as the problem—Jesus knew religion was their prison.

Until Jesus returns, the mission remains liberation and restoration—not retribution.

3. “Faith Grows as it Goes.” – Blind Man from Bethsaida

Mark 8:22–26 (ESV)

22 They came to Bethsaida. Some people brought to Him a blind man and begged Him to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. When He had spit on his eyes and laid His hands on him, He asked, “Do you see anything?” 24 The man looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” 25 Then Jesus laid His hands on his eyes again; his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 And Jesus sent him home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.”

Notice how Jesus helps this man:

  • Choose a better atmosphere – He led him out of the village.
  • Trust His leading – Faith comes by hearing.
  • Deal with your offense – He spit in his eyes.
  • Be honest – Jesus asked what he saw.
  • Trust the process – Jesus prayed twice.
  • Don’t go back – “Don’t even enter the village.”

Key takeaway:

A faith that works requires a working of faith.
