This Is Good News

Luke 4:18–19 (ESV)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor. 

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives

and recovering of sight to the blind, 

to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Freedom Has a Sound

“Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants” (Leviticus 25:10, ESV).

1. The Gospel Is the Sound of Celebration

“…to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:19, ESV)

From the start, God built a rhythm of rejoicing into Israel’s calendar:

• Seven Feasts (Passover to Tabernacles)

A rhythm of rest

• Every 7th Year – Sabbath year 

A rhythm of reset

• Every 50th Year – Jubilee

The Year of Jubilee 

• Rest

• Release 

• Reclamation 

• Redemption 

Why Jubilee?

• God’s Ownership – “The land is mine” (Lev 25:23).

• God’s Justice & Mercy – He restores what’s broken.

• God’s Redemption – It points to Christ.

Jesus is our Jubilee

2. The Gospel Is the Sound of Liberation

“…to proclaim liberty to the captives and… to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18, ESV)

In Christ I Am Liberated from Captivity

• No Longer Captive to Sin 

“Our old self was crucified… so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin” (Romans 6:6, ESV).

• No Longer Captive to Shame 

“There is therefore now no condemnation…” (Romans 8:1, ESV).

In Christ I am Liberated from Oppression 

Jesus liberates:

• Spirit – Peace (John 14:27)

• Body – Healing (Matthew 8:16–17)

• Soul – Joy restored (Psalm 23:3)

Where Christ Reigns There are no Chains!

3. The Gospel Is the Sound of Declaration

January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation became the law of the land; it still had to be proclaimed.

“Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants” (Leviticus 25:10, ESV).

Paul asks…

“How are they to hear without someone preaching?” (Romans 10:14, ESV)

Our Emancipation has been executed. At the cross, the decree was signed in the blood of Jesus. But not everyone knows it. Not everyone has heard it.

Silence in our lives is a death sentence in theirs.

• Let go of yesterday

• Forgive every debt

• Expect a return

• Get ready for revival
