The Final Word: Grace Upon Grace

Text: John 8:2–11 (ESV)

“Early in the morning He came again to the temple. All the people came to Him, and He sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do You say?” This they said to test Him, that they might have some charge to bring against Him” (vs 2-6).

THIS IS GRACE: ALL THAT WAS WORKING AGAINST ME, GRACE WORKED FOR ME

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28 (ESV).

“Jesus bent down and wrote with His finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask Him, He stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more He bent down and wrote on the ground” (vs 6-8).

We miss the point: Scripture doesn’t tell us what He wrote in the dirt; it tells us that He wrote in the dirt.

  • Jesus is not afraid of our dirt.

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.” – Philippians 2:5–7 (ESV).

THIS IS GRACE: GRACE DOESN’T LOOK AWAY FROM SIN, IT LOOKS STRAIGHT THROUGH IT

“But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before Him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” (vs 9-11).

THIS IS GRACE: GRACE GETS THE FINAL WORD

“For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” – 2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV).
