The Father’s Legacy: Impacting Generations
“’For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.’” Deuteronomy 5:9–10 (ESV)
As a father to three wonderful children, I am very much aware of the influence my life and actions have on them. I see the reflections of myself, for better or worse, in their actions, attitudes, and unique quirks,
Fathers leave lasting marks upon our children. Scripture tells us that these influences echo across generations. It may seem unfair, and in many ways it is. It is unjust that the errors and failings of fathers can inflict damage on their families, causing effects that may endure a lifetime. These hardships weren’t the choices of the children but were the repercussions of the fathers’ sins. The fallout from an absent or harmful father can result in generations grappling with a crisis of value and identity. It’s not fair, but it is true.
The good news is that the reverse is equally true. Our love, our godly values, and our wisdom can create a lasting legacy that benefits not only our children but also thousands of generations that follow. I see this in my own family, that is blessed by the legacy of my father who passed on his faith from his father. We are four generations of the God-fearing Norris’s who owe our spiritual lineage to a decision made by my grandfather, a poor uneducated tobacco and cotton farmer from northern Georgia. His decision to follow Jesus as a young man has yielded rich blessings for four generations and promises to continue to do so. Why? Because God’s steadfast love reaches a thousand generations. This is the powerful legacy of a father.
Every sin plaguing our society, every ruin it has begotten, can trace its roots to a father who left behind a flawed legacy. The solution doesn’t lie solely in reaching our sons and daughters; it also involves raising God-fearing fathers who step up, lead their families and communities, and alter the legacy they leave behind.
Men of Grace, your pastor implores you – we need your leadership. America needs your voice. Your families need you to rise and embrace the mantle of fatherhood. What legacy will you leave?
This Sunday, I’ll be delivering a prophetic message titled, “The Failure of a Father: Three Lessons from the Life of Lot.” This is a message our community and nation urgently needs. Come prepared to embrace a divine mandate!
I believe in you, always!
Pastor
PS: Don’t miss out on a powerful Father’s Day weekend at Grace. Also as a word of caution, the message will include mature themes from scripture. Parents of younger children should check their kids into Grace Kids.
