THE COST OF GLUTTONY
Series: The Sinister Seven
Genesis 25:29–34 | 29 Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) 31 Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” 32 Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” 33 Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
1 Corinthians 9:24–27 | 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
How do I stop sacrificing what matters most for what I want right now?
All of the Sinister Seven are distortions of good things.
– Pride distorts the way I see myself.
– Envy distorts the way I see others.
– Anger distorts the desire for justice.
– Sloth distorts the desire for rest.
– Greed distorts the desire for prosperity.
– Gluttony distorts the desire for fullness.
– Lust distorts the desire for love.
Gluttony is an appetite without a governor.
How do I stop sacrificing what matters most for what I want right now?
“Two nations are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you shall be divided;
the one shall be stronger than the other,
the older shall serve the younger.” (Genesis 25:23, ESV)
1. Gluttony Makes Expensive Things Look Cheap
“I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” (Genesis 25:32, ESV)
Never make an important decision when you are tired.
The birthright was more than an inheritance. Despise – to treat it as though it has little or no value.
The appetite screams, “This is worth it!” Your future pays the bill.
2. Gluttony Makes God’s Timing Feel Too Slow
Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” (Genesis 25:31, ESV)
Why is waiting so hard for us?
We rush the process when our FOMO gets louder than our FAITH!
3. Gluttony Tries to Feed Something It Cannot Fix
“Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted.” (Genesis 25:29, ESV)
Most of the time the thing you crave is not the thing you actually need.
4. Godly Devotion Makes Discipline Worth It
“I discipline my body and keep it under control.” (1 Corinthians 9:27, ESV)
1. Get Honest About the Real Hunger
2. Learn Your Triggers
3. Remember What Is at Stake
4. Feed the Greater Desire
The strongest no is born from a greater yes!
