STORMS CORRECTED
Series: Storm Season | Pastor Daniel Norris
Text: Jonah 1:1-7 (ESV)
5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives,” Hebrews 12:5–6 (ESV)
Some storms correct
Some storms challenge
Some storms cultivate
Some storms call
Jonah 1:1–7 (ESV)
1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.
4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. 5 Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. 6 So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.” 7 And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
“How do I get out of this?”
‘God, what do you want to accomplish through this?”
What do I do when I find myself outside the will of God?
1. SOME STORMS COME TO ARREST YOUR ATTENTION
“do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord” (vs 5)
“So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” James 4:17 (ESV)
All sin is consequential.
Before you ask God to calm the storm, Ask if He’s trying to get your attention.
2. SOME STORMS BRING LOVING CORRECTION
“…nor be weary when reproved by him,” (Vs 5).
“I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster.” Jonah 4:2 (ESV)
John 3:17 (ESV)
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Condemnation says, “Run from God.” Correction says, “Run back to God.”
3. SOME STORMS TEACH SUBMISSION
For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, vs 6
“So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.” Jonah 1:15 (ESV)
God is looking for more than an apology. God is looking for obedience.
metanoeo – to change one’s way of life as the result of a complete change of thought and attitude with regard to sin and righteousness.
4. GOD USES STORMS TO INVITE RESTORATION
and chastises every son whom he receives vs 6
“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise… but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 (ESV)
God corrects your path because He cares about your purpose.
