“Are You Marked by the Anointing?”
“I am not interested in your performance, but in your perfume.”
“When the pattern is right then the glory will fall.” ~ Dick Reuben
Big question?
Are you marked by the anointing?
Acts 10: 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee
after the baptism that John preached –
38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the
power of the devil, because God was with him.
As I read through the Bible, both old and New Testament, I see over and over again, signs and
wonders, the miraculous, the power of the Holy Spirit
1. God birth in each one of us a desire to see/experience the supernatural!
2. The power source we are talking about is the Holy Spirit.
Dunamis – The inherent supernatural Power of God
I think we often lump Dunamis (the power) and The Anointing in the same basket. We tend to
use them interchangeably, but they are different.
– Dunamis is like the engine—supernatural power itself.
– Anointing is like the steering wheel—guiding and directing that power for a divine purpose.
It, the anointing, that harnesses that power and points (positions) it for a purpose.
Sometimes burnout exist – we get frustrated, beat up (spiritually and emotionally) because we
are running in lanes, we are not called to run in.
We are taking on more than God called us to, we are running hard in a direction He did not call
us to run in…
The anointing harnesses the power and aligns us (positions us) to operate, to run, in the
purposes He called us to.
Anointing – defined is 1. To pour. 2. To smear all over. 3. To rub into.Anointing Biblical Context: The anointing as described in the Bible can mean that the Spirit of
the Lord is on/in us signified by divine power, consecration, and empowerment for specific
task, purpose and calling.
The anointing typically refers to being set apart, empowered (Dunamis), being enabled by God
through the Holy Spirit for a specific role, office, or task.
Old Testament – To pour on
1 Samuel 16:12 Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And
the LORD said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and
anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from
that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring
good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the
captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound
Jesus Baptism
Matthew 3: 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment
heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.
For Us
Acts 1:8 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
The Anointing of God through Holy Spirit brings power.
Christ was not Jesus’ last name.
He was called several things
– Jesus of Nazareth
– Jesus, son of Joseph
– Jesus Christ –
Christ literally means the anointed one
Messiah comes from the Hebrew word mashiach and means “anointed one” or “chosen one.
The anointing is what enabled Jesus to do what He saw His Father do. It was the Holy Spirit
that revealed the father to the Jesus
It is the anointing, by Holy Spirit that brings the Power to the church and to US!Oil symbolizes anointing
1. Pure Myrrh (Murr)
Myrrh is a bitter resin used in embalming (John 19:39), and was one of the gifts given to Jesus
by the wisemen. (Matthew 2:11), so this is pointing to His eventual suffering and death.
To get it’s sweetness you had to crush it.
Myrrh symbolizes the cost of holiness and the bitterness of death to self.
Myrrh speaks of death.
There is no anointing without death.
If we want to know God’s anointing we have to die to ourselves.
** Die to the old person that we once were.
** Die to our own agenda – our own desires and dreams that are not born of God.
It reminds us, as believers, that following Christ often involves trials, suffering, and also
sacrificial love.
2. Cinnamon.
Cinnamon was a sweet, fragrant spice used in perfumes and incense.
Represents the sweetness of a righteous life and the inner purity of the believer. Holiness,
spiritual sweetness, and inner character are to be evident in a believers life.
3. Calamus (Sweet-smelling Cane).
To get this plant smell it had to be beaten, and the more it was beaten the better it smelled.
Represents a life bent in humility, and integrity.
4. Cassia
Cassia is a cousin of cinnamon and part of the incense used in worship. It only grows at higher
elevations… You had to get up a mountain to get it.
5. Olive Oil
It Represents the presence, the empowering, and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
It was the carrier of all the other ingredients, just as the Spirit is the agent who applies God’s
character to our lives.
The anointing oil paints a picture of a Spirit-filled, consecrated life—one that is purified
through suffering (myrrh), inwardly sweet and holy (cinnamon), humble and walking in
integrity (calamus), obedient (cassia), and empowered by the Holy Spirit (olive oil).3. There is an Anti-Christ spirit at work in the world today.
Anti means against and Christ defined is the anointed one
So, Anti-Christ – Against the Anointed one or against the Anointing
There is a spirit out there today that is out to break, dilute, destroy, make void The anointing of
God!
Anything that is against the anointing of the Holy Spirit – is Anti-Christ!
To walk in the spirit / to live by the spirit, the first key is to
strengthen and feed your spirit man by the Rhema Word of God!
Rhema means the living word of God. The word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. Not
the written word (the Logos).
John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will
teach you all things
– The Bible is a spiritual book and not like other books written by men. It is unique that it
is the only book written by God!
Romans 12:2 Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is– his good, pleasing
and perfect will.
2 Tim. 3:1-5 (NIV) 3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will
be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their
parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the
good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—
form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
5 having a
The word of God and your experience with God should line up. All too often it does not!
Sadly, in church today (across denominational lines), there is such a religious spirit (Anti-Christ
spirit) that personal charisma is often more valued by the church than either the anointing or the
truth.
“Don’t just get the word in you, but let it go through you!”
~ Pastor Daniel Norris
“Information without revelation can lead to damnation.”
4. We need the anointing that comes with the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
