I Am Not Walking Alone

Pneuma: Parakletos

Main Text:

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”

(John 14:16–18, ESV)

Big Question:

What would you do if you always knew what to do?

Jesus sent His disciples, but He didn’t send them alone—He gave them a Guide.

Three Helpful Truths About the Helper

I. He Rests and Remains

“I will not leave you as orphans…” (John 14:18)

“I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him… He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.”

(John 1:32–33, ESV)

Quote:

“If the dove is resting on your shoulder and you don’t want him to fly away, every step you take must be in consideration of the dove.”Bill Johnson

5 Traits of the Dove

1. The Dove Is Wild

You don’t tame the Spirit—you surrender to Him.

2. The Dove Is Sensitive

He won’t adjust to you; you adjust to Him.

3. The Dove Is Faithful

He will never leave you or forsake you. He walks with you, dwells in you, and rests upon you.

4. The Dove Is Attracted to Fruit

A life filled with love, joy, peace, and purity becomes a resting place for the Spirit.

5. The Dove Has No Appetite for Bitterness

Bitterness chokes the anointing. Forgiveness keeps the Dove close.

II. He Comes Alongside

“He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever…” (John 14:16, ESV)

Parakletos:

From para (“beside”) + kaleō (“to call”)

Literally: “One who is called alongside to help.”

Three Key Understandings of the Parakletos

1. Helper – He speaks to me practically

(John 14:16, ESV)

2. Advocate – He speaks to me spiritually

(1 John 2:1)

• Jesus advocates before the Father.

• The Spirit advocates for Christ within us.

3. Consoler – He ministers to me emotionally

(John 14:18)

III. He Can Be Trusted

“Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

(John 14:17)

Three Things Jesus Says the Helper Will Do

1. He Teaches the Truth

(John 14:26)

2. He Reminds You of the Truth

(John 14:26)

3. He Bears Witness to the Truth

(John 15:26)

Final Thought:

The Spirit is your internal compass, your spiritual counselor, and your quiet voice of wisdom.
