HOPE HAS A NAME
Series: Hope Is Alive | Pastor Daniel Norris
“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end”
(Luke 1:31–33, ESV)
When Scripture says “in His name,” it means acting under the full weight of the One who stands behind the name. It is a proclamation of IDENTITY, AUTHORITY, ACCESS, SALVATION and HOPE
Five Declarations in His Name
- There is IDENTITY in His Name
“You shall call His name Jesus” (Luke 1:31, ESV)
A name carries identity.
Jesus is the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew name Yeshua.
–Yeshua means “Yahweh is Salvation.”
His name reveals to us WHO HE IS
“…and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6, ESV).
- There is AUTHORITY in His Name
“He will be great…” (Luke 1:32, ESV)
“God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” (Philippians 2:9–10, ESV).
Power is the ability to act.
Authority is the authorization to act.
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Matt 28:19)
- There is ACCESS in His Name
“He will be called the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:32, ESV).
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6, ESV).
“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5, ESV).
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full” (John 16:23–24, ESV).
- There is SALVATION in His Name
“The Lord God will give to him the throne” (Luke 1:32, ESV)
Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” John 12:31–32 (ESV)
“The crowd answered him, ‘We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up?’” (John 12:34, ESV).
Jesus didn’t come to rescue your world, he came to rescue you.
“There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12, ESV).
- There is HOPE in His Name
“Of his kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:33, ESV)
“For the kingdom of God is righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17, ESV).
Hope isn’t an idea. It isn’t a feeling. It isn’t a season. It’s a person… that that person has a name. His name is JESUS!
