He Who Promised Is Faithful

No matter what we face in life, we can trust the One who is forever faithfu“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23 (ESV)

Many of us are likely in a waiting room of life. We are waiting to see a promise fulfilled…and the waiting can be hard.

  • Job loss
  • Choosing college/career path
  • Medical diagnosis
  • Relationship troubles
  • Starting a business
  • Pursuing God’s call of ministry

What we do in the waiting tells a lot about what we truly believe.

Three things we need to do in the waiting:

POINT 1: Encourage Your Heart

Hebrews 10:23 — “Let us hold fast…”

In other words, encourage your heart.

Life doesn’t always go the way we planned

1. Don’t Lose Hope

Proverbs 13:12 says, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”

If we don’t encourage our hearts, we begin to view life through the eyes of disappointment.

Causes:

  • Hesitation
  • Become untrusting
  • Guarded
  • Isolate
  • Question
  • Feeling Unworthy

These are all a playground for the enemy

The latter part of that verse says, “but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”

Look back and see the faithfulness of God! This adds fuel to your faith!

2. Tighten Your Grip

Remember, the writer of Hebrews tells us to “hold fast”- tighten your grip

Difficult moments always reintroduce us to ourselves.

Your behavior will bear out what you believe:

• How you react/respond

• Your inner thoughts and emotions

• What comes out of your mouth

• Decisions made with selfish motives or selfless motives

Make the decision to hold on when it is often easier to let go.

3. Stay Out Of The Way

We aren’t good waiters. We think we need to “help God out”

Examples:

  • Try to control/manipulate situations and make them work in our favor
  • Think our way is better
  • Impress God by doing enough to please God and then it will happen

*Sarah & Hagar

Even when we don’t know how He is going to do it…

Understand why He does it the way He does…

Or even when He is going to do it…

Delay doesn’t mean denied.

Isaiah 55:8–11 (NIV)

8“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

It’s not up to us to understand God’s method, delivery, or His plan.

It is up to us to encourage our hearts in the waiting

POINT 2: Speak the Promise

Hebrews 10:23 “…to the confession of our hope without wavering”

We speak 15-16,000 words per day but only 500-700 words are acutally meaningful according to one study

We don’t always consider the weight of our words

Genesis 17:5 ESV, “No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.”

Genesis 17:15-16 ESV, “15 And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”

Even over our own lives:

Isaiah 43:1, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”

2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Galatians 3:26, 29, “26 For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith…29 if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”

Perhaps one of the reasons the Lord did this was so that each time they would call out each other’s name, it was a confession of the promise God had spoken over their lives.

If you hear something often enough, you’ll come into agreement with it – whether it’s positive or negative.

Ephesians 4:29, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

Put confession to practice every day:

• Speak the Word of the Lord.

• Declare His truth over your life.

• Speak hope over your family.

• Prophesy God’s promises over your children.

When you confess and come into agreement with the truth of God’s Word, you silence the enemy!

There Are Over 7,000 Promises in God’s Word Over You:

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5, ESV)

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you.” (Isaiah 26:3, ESV)

“Seek first the kingdom… and all these things will be added.” (Matthew 6:33, ESV)

“Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.” (Isaiah 40:31, ESV)

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.” (Psalm 32:8, ESV)

“By his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5, ESV)

“I know the plans I have for you…” (Jeremiah 29:11, ESV)

POINT 3: Trust the One who Is Forever Faithful

Hebrews 10:23 “…for He who promised is faithful”

It’s not our job to understand, it’s up to us to trust.

“Obedience trumps understanding.” – Pastor Daniel

• His word never returns void — we can rest there

• Trust His character and nature

• Look back and see His faithfulness time and time again

• It’s not our job to make it happen — but let Him hold us in the waiting

• Obedience trumps understanding

• He doesn’t waste His words

• What He says, He will do
