Giant Slayer Begins

This weekend, we begin a new series called Giant Slayer. For the next eight weeks, we are going to take a slow and careful walk through the life of David.

Not the flannel board or the safe Sunday school version many remember from their childhood. We are going to take a hard look at the life of a man where we are invited to see the good, the bad, the ugly of his life, and yet still see a man whom God calls a man after His own heart.

As I’ve been preparing, I have asked myself, “What actually made David a man after God’s own heart? Was it his courage in the face of adversity? Was it his worship ability or his leadership skills?” Here is what I have concluded: it was his ability to turn every place of humiliation into humility.

David’s story is full of moments that could have allowed bitterness, anger, and hurt to harden his heart. He was overlooked by his own father. He was mocked by his brothers. David was hunted like an animal by Saul. He was even betrayed by those who were the closest to him. At every turn, he had an opportunity to take up an offense, and yet he kept choosing the low place.

We live in a world that chases elevation, but the Spirit is drawn to humility.

That statement comes directly from David, who would know very well what God is looking for. He said, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise” (Psalm 51:17, ESV).

It is, in fact, our brokenness and humility that attract His grace.

I am praying this series will help prepare you for the coming battles in life, but even more, I am praying that God will shape in us a heart that His Spirit is drawn to.

Let’s become giant slayers together!

P.S. This weekend is also our one-day Built to Last Marriage Conference. This conference is for those who are married or hope to be one day. Great marriages don’t happen by accident. They must be built to last with intentionality. We have Children’s Ministry planned for your kids from 0 to 5th grade, so make sure you register them as well. Jenna and I are believing God will breathe fresh life into homes and restore vision. If you have not signed up yet, there is still time!
