FRAMING UP A HEALTHY HOME
Series: Home Improvement | Pastor Daniel Norris
A well-framed home needs to be three things…straight, square, and supported.
Question: Does scripture give us a frame for building a healthy home?
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Ephesians 2:19–22 (ESV)
If you are looking to build a healthy home there are three things you need…
- A STRONG HOME NEEDS A STANDARD
The frame of a home is designed to carry its weight.
When alignment is off, problems multiply.
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise… submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:15, 21 (ESV)
Wisdom Aligns with the Word
The question should be, what is God’s wisdom for this situation?
When the stress and strain is felt, ask yourself… where are we out of alignment with God’s word?
- A CHRISTLIKE HOME COMPLEMENTS ONE ANOTHER
Complement – to complete or bring to perfection
We are stronger when we cooperate, weaker when we compete.
Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ… Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord… Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her… Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Ephesians 5:21, 22, 25; 6:1 (ESV)
The Role of the Husband
- He’s called to love.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. Ephesians 5:25 (ESV)
- He’s called to Shepherd.
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15 (ESV)
Fathers… bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 (ESV)
- He’s called to provide and protect
But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 Timothy 5:8 (ESV)
Live with your wives in an understanding way… showing honor. 1 Peter 3:7 (ESV)
The Role of the Wife
- She’s called to strengthen.
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. Ephesians 5:22 (ESV)
- She’s called to cultivate.
She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. Proverbs 31:26 (ESV)
- She’s called to partner.
An excellent wife is the crown of her husband. Proverbs 12:4 (ESV)
The Role of the Children
- They’re called to honor and obey.
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Ephesians 6:1 (ESV)
- They’re called to learn.
Honor your father and mother… that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land. Ephesians 6:2–3 (ESV)
- They’re called to prosper.
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 (ESV)
- A SUPPORTED HOME CAN STAND THROUGH EVERY STORM AND SEASON
…we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. Ephesians 4:15–16 (ESV)
You can deep love one another and not be framed right!
