Finding Sanity in an Insane World
Why is it that common sense is not so common? Was it ever? It seems like past generations acknowledged some basic truths and fundamentals that we have long since abandoned. We live in a confused and chaotic world. So, what are we to do?
There was a time when King Nebuchadnezzar lost his mind. At the peak of his pride, he was humbled. He went from being the most powerful leader in the world to roaming around in a field, eating grass like a cow.
It wasn’t until he humbled himself that he found restoration. He offered a pathway back to sanity when we lose our senses.
“At the same time, my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and splendor returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble” (Daniel 4:36–37, ESV).
His sanity was restored when he chose to honor God, heed His truth, and walk in humility. In a world that often seems insane, how do we keep our feet on solid ground? How do we restore our sanity?
1. Honor God
Sanity first requires acknowledging that God is sovereign over all things. He is King, and I am not. We must look to Him, trust Him with our lives, and direct every action with Him in mind.
2. Heed His Truth
In a world drowning in opinions, God’s truth is our anchor. We don’t weigh things on the opinions or polls of those around us. We turn to Scripture and search out the truth. Truly, His word is the light that shows us the way.
3. Stay Humble
As James reminds us, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6, ESV). For the believer, we have two options: be humble or be humiliated. It is far better that we choose to humble ourselves before the Lord and others. This keeps pride at bay and makes us more attractive to His presence.
