Daniel’s Declaration

In Daniel 1:3-8, we see the king of Babylon bringing the best young men from Judah to his palace. They were strong, healthy, and intelligent, meant to serve in royal service after three years of training. Daniel, along with Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, were among those chosen—but there was something deeper going on than just physical training. The king even renamed these men to reflect the gods and culture of Babylon. Daniel became Belteshazzar, meaning “Bel protects my life,” shifting his identity from “God is my judge” to that of a Babylonian god.

Despite the king’s attempts to change their identity and conform them to a foreign culture, Daniel made a bold decision. “Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king” (Daniel 1:8, ESV). He declared, “Though you may change my name, I will not forget who I am in God.” He refused to let himself be corrupted or tarnished by what surrounded him.

We all face pressures to conform to the world around us, to let go of the values and identity God has given us. But like Daniel, we can make a choice. We can declare, “I will not defile myself! I will not forget who God says I am!”

When culture shifts, WE STAND!

When the world is troubled, WE SPEAK TRUTH!

When the music plays, WE WON’T BOW!

When a nation goes insane, WE STAY HUMBLE.

When the writing is on the wall, WE STAY HOLY.

When you’re in the den, STAY HUNGRY!

We need some Daniels in our day. Men and women of God who have resolute convictions that are willing to stand out and be tested against the world’s standards and will not allow themselves to be tainted, tarnished, or degraded. Last Sunday, our youth and young adults took this series to heart and made their own declaration, and I want to encourage you to do the same. Take time this week and write out your declaration. What will you stand for? What will you refuse to let go of in your faith, no matter the pressures?

Your declaration can be a powerful reminder of your identity and purpose in God. As you write, remember that the God who called you by name is the same God who strengthens you to stand firm.

I can’t wait to hear what God places on your heart!

Grace to You,

Pastor Daniel
