Grace Upon Grace

Text: Galatians 5:1; 13-14 (ESV)

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (1).

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (13-14).

Grace is not a cover-up for our sins; grace is freedom from the power of sin.

Radical Truth #1

Because of grace, you are fully free, not partially free.

“For freedom Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1, ESV).

“Freedom” is the Greek word ‘eleutheria,’ meaning free, unhindered, independent. This word describes someone free of obligations, restrictions, or slavery.

Grace is Freedom FROM:

– Dead Religion

– Sin and Sickness

– Death and Hell

– Shame and Condemnation

WE WERE NOT JUST SAVED FROM SOMETHING, WE WERE SAVED FOR SOMEONE.

Grace is Freedom FOR:

– Life-Giving Fellowship

– Righteousness and Healing

– Life in Fullness

– Identity and Purpose

I am fully free to become like Jesus.

What the law could only tell us to do, grace gives the power to do!

Radical Truth #2

A little lie can spoil your whole life.

“Do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (v. 1).

We become slaves to the lies we believe.

“A little leaven leavens the whole lump” (Galatians 5:8-9).

Lie #1: “You are what you do.”

Lie #2: “This is no big deal.”

Lie #3: “Earn This.”

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32, ESV)

Truth sets free… Truth is the key.

We cancel lies with truth.

Truth #1: I am who He says I am (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Truth #2: This is beneath me (Ephesians 4:22-24)

Truth #3: His grace is sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Grace doesn’t just change WHAT we do; GRACE changes WHO we are.

Radical Truth #3

Freedom is too great a gift to waste on foolish pursuits.

“Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh” (vs 13).

Freedom to choose does not mean freedom from consequence.

“Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:7-9, ESV),

The only way to fully live in this freedom is by fully embracing His Grace.

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16, ESV)

You can’t force fruit.

Ask: “Holy Spirit, what are you saying to me?”
