Beyond Blessed What’s in Your Heart?

Text: Luke 6:20–38

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38)

Four Reasons to Grow Generosity in Your Heart

  1. Generosity Extracts a Greedy Heart
  • Greed comes naturally; generosity comes supernaturally.
  • No other command of Jesus works selfishness and greed out of us like generosity.
  • I only presently hold what is eternally His. Luke 6:30 “Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back.”
  • A New Attitude: “I don’t give to get, I get to give!”
  1. Generosity Heals the Grieving Heart
  • Greed attacks us BEFORE we give; grief attacks AFTER we give.
  • Why do we grieve? Because we mistakenly believe it is ours! “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great.” (Luke 6:35)
  • Grief is proof that we are behaving like owners, not stewards. “You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’” (Deuteronomy 15:10–11)
  1. Generosity Grows a Giving Heart
  • God wants us to be generous as He is generous.
  • Why is sharing one of the first lessons we teach our children?
  • God wants us to be like Him! Guess what your Father in heaven is? He’s a giver.
  • A new prayer: “Lord, what do you want me to give?”
  1. Generosity Leads to a Grateful Heart
  • Jesus blessed the poor, the hungry, those who mourn, the rejected, and ridiculed. At one time, that is where we all were. Never lose that lowly perspective. “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” (Psalm 20:7)
  • This keeps us in a grateful position.
  • Some of the most generous people I know are also the most wealthy. They are not generous because they are wealthy; they are wealthy because they are generous.
  • Never get over getting saved!
