Day 9
The Sound of Worship
By: Sarah Brosher
“True worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth,
for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.”
(John 4:23, NIV)
Earlier this year, I was driving home from the gym. I was tired, drained from the day, and ready to get home. Normally, I’d have music, a podcast, or something to fill the quiet. But that day, I left everything off. No noise. Just complete, total silence.
As I pulled into my neighborhood, I suddenly felt the presence of God fill my car. The Holy Spirit began speaking to me deeply as I began to worship Him. It was unexpected, unplanned, and honestly a little inconvenient, in the moment. I wasn’t “seeking.” I wasn’t in “worship mode.” And yet, He met me.
That moment was so strong that I still think about it. And every time I do, I think of how easily I could have missed it. If I had filled the silence or rushed the moment, I could have missed hearing His voice.
Sometimes the sound of worship doesn’t involve music or singing; it’s about being still, pausing long enough to hear Him again.
What I love about John 4 is that Jesus finds the Samaritan woman and meets her in the middle of her everyday routine. He catches her as she’s going through the busyness of her day. She is drawing water while minding her own business, just doing what she always does. And yet, right there in the middle of her routine, Jesus interrupted her schedule with a simple invitation to worship Him in spirit and in truth.
Jesus didn’t go to the temple to make this announcement. He didn’t wait for a church service or a perfect atmosphere. He revealed the heart of true worship to a woman who likely felt unnoticed, unqualified, unseen, and in a place that was completely unexpected for her.
What I’ve learned is that true worship isn’t dependent on a place; it’s dependent on our posture. Have we made ourselves available for the Lord to come in and interrupt us even in our busyness?
The question isn’t whether God is speaking. It’s, “Do we have space to hear?”
There is a sound. Can you hear it? Lean in again. Take the time to listen to His voice and worship Him right where you are.
Reflection:
- Where in your daily life might God be trying to speak, but you’re too busy to hear?
- When was the last time silence became worship for you?
- What practical step can you take this week to create space for God to interrupt your routine?
Prayer:
Lord, slow my heart down long enough to hear You. Teach me to be aware of Your presence and sensitive to Your voice. Interrupt my routine, my hurry, and the noise. Let my life carry the sound of true worship. In Jesus’ name, amen.
