Day 8

Hunger for the Word

By: Debbie Milton

“Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer
that breaks the rock in pieces?” (Jeremiah 23:29, ESV)

I was 26 years old and just beginning to explore what it truly meant to have a “relationship with Jesus.” My husband and new church family spoke about Scripture with such passion and conviction, and I remember wanting to experience that for myself.

I’ll never forget sitting in Sunday School with my first leather-bound Bible resting on my lap, mesmerized by the teaching. Something awakened in me, a spark of hunger I didn’t even know was possible. I wanted to know the stories, understand the meaning behind the verses, and talk about Scripture the way others around me did.

That desire became a fire. During my lunch breaks, I would go to the small Christian bookstore near my workplace and search the aisles for Bible study booklets. I would take them home and devour them. Every page stirred a deeper hunger. Every answer led to more questions. I simply could not get enough.

That hunger drew me to God and His story…and to my own place within it. After six months of reading, studying, and wrestling with the Word, I surrendered my life to Jesus. I have never looked back. Decades later, that same fire still burns. His Word continues to reveal who He is, who I am in Christ, and how my story fits into His eternal plan.

God’s Word is not passive ink on paper. It is living, active, and able to transform us from the inside out (Hebrews 4:12). It opens our spiritual eyes and ears to hear His voice. It renews our minds, heals our hearts, and strengthens our faith. Scripture is like a mirror that shows us who God is and who we are becoming in Him.

Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:14), and as we consume the written Word, we become more like the Living Word. His truth leads us, His light guides us (Psalm 119:105), and His voice forms our identity and purpose. The Word shapes us, purifies us, and fuels a holy hunger for more of Him.

Today, take time to pause and evaluate. How hungry are you for God’s Word? Hunger is not measured only by emotion but by pursuit. If the fire has dimmed, the Spirit is ready to reignite it.

Reflection:

  • Where do you sense God inviting you to deepen your time in His Word this year?
  • On a scale of 1–10, how would you measure your desire to read, meditate, and grow in Scripture?
  • Choose one intentional step this week to feed your hunger for Scripture:
    • Set a consistent Bible reading time each day
    • Begin a Bible reading plan or book study
    • Memorize one verse this week
    • Journal what God speaks through Scripture

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for Your living and powerful Word. Stir a fresh hunger in me to seek You daily. Ignite a fire in my heart that never fades. Open my ears to hear Your voice and my heart to understand Your truth. Open my eyes to see new revelations in Your Word. Shape me, refine me, and transform me as I draw near to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
