Day 6

Return to the Secret Place

By: Cindy Lewis

“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and
pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in
secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6, ESV)

There is a call going out from the heart of God. It is an invitation to return to the secret place. In a world filled with constant noise and endless distractions, Jesus reminds His followers that the most powerful moments of communion with God often happen unseen.

The secret place isn’t just a physical room; it’s a spiritual posture. It’s the quiet space where our hearts meet His presence. In Matthew 6:6, Jesus contrasts private devotion with public display. He warns against praying merely to be seen by others and instead invites us into a relationship that is deeply personal and intimate.

Within the secret place, we rediscover what truly sustains us. There, we are reminded that prayer is about intimacy, surrender, and transformation. When we close the door, literally or figuratively, we shut out distractions and open ourselves to divine dialogue. Prayer becomes more than speaking to God; it becomes listening for His still, small voice.

Returning to the secret place must become a priority. Every move of God has its beginning in the secret place of prayer. Elijah prayed in solitude before the fire fell. Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray, and miracles followed. The disciples waited together in an upper room before the Holy Spirit came in power.

When we neglect this sacred space, our spiritual lives grow shallow. We may know the motions of faith but lose the intimacy that fuels it. God rewards what is done in secret, not with worldly applause, but with peace, power, and His abiding presence. The secret place reveals that God sees what is unseen, valuing genuine, heartfelt prayer even when no one else notices.

Returning to the secret place is an act of realignment. It reminds us that God’s approval is far more valuable than human recognition. It centers our souls in the presence of the One who knows us best and loves us most.

Today, hear the gentle whisper of the Father calling you, “Come away with Me.” The reward of the secret place isn’t fame or success, it’s God Himself.

Reflection:

  • When was the last time you intentionally spent time alone with God, away from distractions?
  • What barriers keep you from making time for the secret place?
  • How might your relationship with God deepen if you made the secret place a daily priority?
  • What rewards (peace, direction, strength) has God given you when you’ve met Him in secret before?

Prayer:

Father God, thank You for loving me so deeply and desiring communion with me. Forgive me for being casual about returning to the secret place and for letting busyness crowd out intimacy with You. Posture my heart for no other reason but to be with You. May my motives be pure and my devotion holy before You. Renew the fire within me, and help me to wholeheartedly become all You need me to be for Your Kingdom purposes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
