Day 3 – Bonus Prelude
Prepare to Fast
By: Daniel Norris
“Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly.” (Joel 1:14, ESV)
At Grace, we know something about renovation. For the past five years, we have been expanding our church campus, opening a new front door to our community that says we are a church for the whole family.
Along the way, we have learned a lot. One key lesson that stands out is you often spend more time preparing than building.
We have poured time and energy into developing plans, clearing land, and laying foundations. All of this took place long before we ever raised a wall.
Why?
Because before you build, you have to make room.
That is exactly what fasting is. It is the spiritual act of clearing space. It is emptying ourselves of the flesh to make room for more of Him.
Andrew Murray said it best, “Fasting helps us let go of the flesh. Prayer helps us take hold of the Spirit.”
Fasting is not a diet. Fasting is not a trend. It is a sacred discipline that positions you for breakthrough.
Types of Fasts:
- Complete Fast: Water only (for experienced fasters).
- Partial Fast: Restrict certain meals or foods (for example, the Daniel Fast or sun-up to sun-down).
- Soul Fast: Disconnect from media, entertainment, or distractions.
Before You Fast:
- Start with your why. What are you seeking God for? Name it.
- Be realistic. If this is new, choose a fast that is sustainable for your body and schedule.
- Replace meals with the Word and worship. Fasting without prayer is just skipping food.
- Stay hydrated. Drink water. Get rest. Let your body adjust.
- Prepare your space. Clean out your fridge. Adjust your calendar. Create margin.
Prayerfully make a healthy, Spirit-led choice. Remember, this is not about rules; it is about making room.
Prayer:
Lord, as I prepare to fast, I consecrate these next 21 days to You. I do not want to carry old habits, old burdens, or old mindsets into this new season. Empty me of myself. Fill me with Your Spirit. Do in me what only You can. I am making room for more of You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
