Day 13
Let Them See Jesus
By: Jenna Norris
“And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:6–9, NLT)
“Mom, can you tell me a story about when you were little?”
I loved hearing this question when my kids were young. Their curious hearts and big eyes filled with wonder wanted to see the world through my eyes.
Our kids want to know our story—who we are, what we’ve walked through, and where we found God along the way. It gives them a deeper connection with us and, in time, a hunger to know Jesus for themselves.
As parents, we are the ones our children look up to and learn from. They imagine our stories as we tell them, picture the people and places we describe, and often, even without realizing it, begin to shape their view of who God is through what they see in us. Our role is to guide them, show them who Jesus really is, and find teachable moments that root them in truth and help them build on a firm foundation.
Storytelling has always been part of God’s design. Before there were printed pages or social media memories, there were voices—moms, dads, mentors, and leaders retelling the stories of God’s faithfulness so the next generation would know Him. That’s how faith has been passed down for thousands of years.
In Deuteronomy 6, Moses told the Israelites to tie God’s commands to their hands, wear them on their foreheads, and write them on their doorposts. It wasn’t a literal command; it was an invitation to a life of devotion. Their love for God was meant to be seen in everything they did, said, and thought.
Our lives should tell that same story. The way we love, forgive, worship, and talk about Jesus should be so genuine that our children can’t help but notice. Our homes should carry His presence, and our daily routines should reflect His heart.
When our faith becomes visible, it stirs a hunger in our kids. They begin to see that following Jesus isn’t just something we talk about; it’s something we live. Church isn’t a Sunday event; it’s who we are every day. Every bedtime prayer, every car ride conversation, and every story of God’s goodness fans the flame of faith in their hearts.
No matter how young or old our children may be, they’re watching and learning what it looks like to walk with God. They need to see that same hunger for Him burning in us. Bring them into the conversation. Read Scripture together. Ask the big questions. Pray as a family and celebrate answered prayers. Let your life tell the story of Jesus and His unfailing love.
That’s how we steward their faith and create a hunger for His presence that lives on from generation to generation. When they see Jesus in us, they’ll want to know Him for themselves.
Reflection:
- What story is your life telling to the next generation?
- How can you make faith more visible in your home this week?
- What are you doing right now to help steward your children’s faith?
Prayer:
Lord, let my life tell the story of Your faithfulness. May my home echo Your love and truth so clearly that it stirs a hunger for You in my children. Help me live and speak in a way that points them back to You again and again. In Jesus’ name, amen.
